Why Manufacturing Workers Must Take Control of Their Own Safety

Posted July 27th, 2016

Most industrial workers understand the hazards of their chosen line of work. While the company you work for may put significant efforts into maintaining a safe workplace for their employees, some of the burden still falls back on the employee.

Take control of your safety by being an active participant in safety activities. Not sure where to begin? Starting with these areas:

  • PPE
  • Hazard Assessment
  • Constant Vigilance
  • Timely Reporting

Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, is at the core of taking ownership of your own safety. Ensuring you have the proper footwear, eye protection, ear plugs, hard hats, and other wearable safety items provide the physical barriers to help avoid injury even when accidents occur. Further, making sure you are using the equipment properly is key to it provided the protection you may need. PPE is required on the majority of industrial worksite, so not only does wearing it keep you secure, it helps keep your job secure too.

Performing a hazard assessment not only gives you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the potential dangers around you, it gives you the chance to do something about them. By taking a few moments to consider your surroundings you are helping to ensure you have a safer day. Take a moment to make sure your workplace is clean, with all tools in their proper place. If anything appears to present a potentially hazardous situation, and you can take a moment to handle it, then consider it time well spent.

An industrial workplace is ever-changing. As things are moved and shifted throughout the day, the hazards in your area will change right along with them. By remaining vigilant, you will be able to identify new threats as they present themselves, and you may have the opportunity to correct them before an injury occurs.

If an accident does take place, report it immediately. Not only will this help prevent others from potentially being injured, it will make sure those in the higher levels of management know what has occurred. In instances where an accident or injury almost occurred, report those too. Not only will this give the business the option to correct the potentially hazardous situation, it may actually prevent the injury of a coworker in the future.
