Juggling Multiple Interviews

Posted January 27th, 2014

Almost all job searches start slow and then – if you market yourself consistently – build momentum to the point that you may find yourself with the happy “problem” of having to juggle several interviews in the same week, if not even the same day.

Read below for tips on how to handle multiple interviews.

  • You’re going to have to come up with a plan. If you have two interviews on the same day, for example, you’re going to have to write down how you’re going to ensure you arrive on time to each, with clothes and hair presentable and tidy. You also don’t want to look rushed.
  • If one company wants to interview you at 1 p.m. and the other at 2 p.m., you’re going to have to ask one of them to reschedule. Generally, that will be the company you heard from second. If that’s the case, when the recruiter calls you and say she’d love to get you in for an interview Tuesday at 3 p.m., but you’re already scheduled for another interview Tuesday at 2 p.m., you’ll have to gently say you have other commitments and would like to reschedule for 10 a.m. or for another day. Hint: you also don’t have to say you have another interview that day; “I have other commitments that day that I can’t change” should be enough.
  • Juggling multiple interviews in a short period of time also means you’re going to have to come up with a plan so that you don’t start mistaking one company for another. Consider creating a worksheet for each interview that has the company name, website, interviewer’s name, brief job description, and other pertinent information all in one place. You’ll also want to have separate talking points for each interview handy.
  • Ready yourself for each interview separately. Build portfolios for each interview apart from the others (and make sure you make it hard to mistake one for another when you’re rushed).
  • Speaking of being rushed, no matter how stressed you may feel as you hurry to get from one interview to another, never look it. Always be focused on the company before you and not thinking of interviews past or future.
