Time Management for IT Workers
Posted July 25th, 2016
IT professionals can work hours that are a good deal beyond the average. In fact, one survey reported an IT average of 52 hours a week. That is a lot of hours on the job, and that equates to a lot of work that has to be done. In order to get all that work done, IT workers need to have good time management skills. Here are a few suggestions to help develop those skills.
1. Make sleep a priority
This may seem like an odd time management skill, but actually it is among the most important. Getting the sleep you need will help you to perform better at work and get more done. Put it on your schedule like any other task – at least seven to eight hours. Have a definite time during the day when you stop any activity and turn in for the night, and stick to it.
2. Define your workday
Often, employees will get calls or emails at night and on weekends. You need to discuss with your supervisor about limiting this kind of after hours work so that you are not constantly on call.
3. Limit time spent on email
Set aside certain times during the day when you will look at email, and check it only during those times. You need to avoid constantly checking email every time you get a new message.
4. Establish goals that are doable.
A daily to-do list won’t do you much good if it has too much on it or if your tasks are too big to get done. If you have big projects to work on, break them down into smaller parts and tackle each part separately.
5. Stop being a paper pusher
We normally have a lot of paper on our desks that we shuffle from one place to another. This just contributes to clutter. Make a policy that you will only touch the paper once. That means you have to figure out what to do with it right away – either act on it, file it, or get rid of it.
6. Stop multitasking
It just doesn’t work. In fact, it hurts productivity. Focus on one thing at a time.
