Things to Bring to a Job Interview (In Addition to Your Resume)

Posted June 18th, 2012

What should you bring to an interview – in addition to your resume? Read below for some surprisingly powerful “tools” you can bring to impress the interviewer/hiring manager and make you a standout candidate.

  • Bring a “brag book.” This can be a folder that you will leave behind (all the better for your hiring manager to remember you well later) that could contain all of some of the following:
  • Your resume
  • A list of references
  • Samples of your work (particularly applicable for artists, writers and other creative types)
  • A list of any awards you’ve received
  • Articles you’ve written in trade magazines
  • Any newspaper clippings that mention and/or feature you in a positive professional light (a shot of you waving a flag during a Memorial Day parade taking by your local paper’s photographer doesn’t qualify)

If you won a tablet computer, you might want to bring it along to showcase any electronic samples of your work, or to use as you discuss where the company is going and you can help it get to its destination.

Executive recruiter Nick Corcodilos has a great phrase he says is critical important to landing a great job: “Do the job to get the job.” This means you could come to the interview with a written plan regarding how you’ll accomplish the challenges you believe need to be addressed in the position. You can bring this report to the interview but it’s also a very powerful tool to send to the hiring manager in a follow up/thank you e-mail after the interview.

You may want to jot down the questions you want to be sure to ask and the points you want to be sure to make so that you won’t forget to discuss them with your hiring manager. It’s OK to be nervous during an interview and this “guide” can make sure you and the interviewer cover all points you want to cover.
