How to Be More Organized
Posted February 6th, 2017
We all want to be more organized. In fact, you have probably made many efforts in the past to become more organized. Perhaps some efforts have had some success, while others not so much. If you are having trouble getting organized, here are some tips from an organization professional who helps people get organized for a living.
1. Have a focused to-do list
How do you put your to-do list together? Is it simply a haphazard group of items that pop into your head, something you make up as you go along? Is there any rhyme or reason to it? You need to have an organizing principle that guides your to-do list. The list must serve a larger goal or objective – your work strategy or work goals.
This will help you to determine what to put on the list, as well as how to prioritize tasks on the list.
2. Look at time commitments
From time to time, take a look at the tasks/events on your calendar with an eye toward what you are spending your time on and how much time you are spending on particular things.
You want to make sure you are making the best use of your time. Does your time commitment align with your overall business goals or are they out of whack?
3. Stop work 15 minutes early.
This has a two-fold purpose. The first is to reduce the amount of time available, thereby forcing you to work more efficiently. The second is to give you a little time to reflect on your day, to think about what you accomplished, what worked and what did not, and where you need to go tomorrow.
4. Use tools to help you stay organized
These could be web-based apps, or an old fashioned notebook or calendar. You need to think about how you process information and then tailor your tool to fit your mindset. Some people are more visual than others, some like to look at the overall picture of tasks and events, while others have a more a step-by-step mentality.
Everyone is different, and you need to use the tool that works best for you. Don’t rely on what others do to stay organized. Develop your own system, one that works for you.
