Motivating Temporary Employees
Posted October 5th, 2010
To get the most out of your employees, you should show them respect and consideration.
The same goes for temporary workers who may be employed at your site. After all, you wouldn’t be using temporary workers if you didn’t need their skills. In fact, many employers now use temporary employees in critical positions within their company. It’s critical to the success of your business that you treat them with the utmost of respect.
In addition, you get what you sow. Show respect to all employees and you’ll undoubtedly receive their best efforts on your behalf.
Below are some additional tips to help you motivate temporary employees.
1) When temporary workers arrive at your site for their assignments, welcome them much as you would a regular employee. Give them a tour of your facility, show them where the restrooms and lunchrooms are located. Tell them a bit about your business and how the work they’ll be doing for you contributes to your company reaching its goals. Giving temporary workers this type of “inside” information makes them feel more like a part of your team.
2) When presenting temporary employees to your regular staff, don’t introduce any of them as “the temp.” Instead, tell your employees their new colleagues’ first names and the duties they’ll be taking on at your company. Do this and you’ll have introduced the temporary workers in a respectful and professional manner, which helps the temporary workers but also puts you in a good light in their eyes.
3) Keep your temporary workers apprised of those things happening in your company. Without giving away proprietary information, send memos and announcements to your temporary workers as appropriate. Invite them to staff and department meetings. Be sure to give them information regarding your company’s goals and challenges. In fact, if you have a policy that doesn’t allow temporary workers to attend staff meetings, etc., seriously consider revising that policy.
