A Survey of Web Developers

Posted April 11th, 2016

Recently, a large social media site for tech professionals conducted a survey of developers around the world – almost 60,000 coders from nearly 200 countries. The developers were asked a variety of questions about their industry, careers, and jobs. Here are some of the things they found.

1. Most developers are employed.
Almost 70 percent of those responding said they were employed full time, while over 90 percent were employed full time, self-employed, or freelance.

That means there are very few developers who are actively looking for work. They are passive job candidates and have to be approached that way.

2. Although few are actively looking, many would listen.
Only about 15 percent of developers are actively looking for work, but almost 80 percent said they would be open to hearing about new job opportunities. So, there is opportunity there for recruiters.

3. Most jobs are from referrals.
In most countries, many developers, almost one-third, find out about jobs from friends. About one-fourth have landed jobs through recruiters.

4. Salary is important
Almost two-thirds said salary was a very important consideration when considering a new job . But they identified other factors as important as well – work-life balance, company culture, flexible job schedules, and meaningful work were all ranked as important.

5. Many of them find the interview process frustrating.
They listed a number of ways to improve the process, including being introduced to the team they would be working with, showing them more live code, showing them where they would work, preparing them for the people they will be talking to, being more flexible about scheduling, and providing a better cup of coffee.

6. For the developers, the most important aspects of their job are learning new technologies and building new things.
Fully two-thirds of all respondents cited those two factors as the most important. About half also said having control over product decisions is also important.

7. Software products has the most developers
About one-third of all developers work in the software products industry.

8. About 10 percent are remote workers.
Those with more experience are more likely to work remotely than those developers with less experience.
