Employees are Feeling Burdened by Work

Posted August 7th, 2017

Are you feeling overwhelmed at work? Many people are, according to a recent survey.

In fact, one-third of all employees feel that they just have too much work, more than they can handle, the study says. Ironically, the same skills that have helped many to perform better have led to them trying to do too much. Being interrupted while working and responding to work-related problems during personal time have also led to feelings of being overworked.

In general, there are three main reasons why people feel that they have too much to do.

1. Scattered efforts
More than half of workers say they are asked to do too many things at the same time and are interrupted too frequently.

2. Deadlines
Just about all employees feel that they do not have enough time to get all of their tasks finished. This leads to more pressure and stress on the job, which in turn leads to feelings of being overworked.

3. Frivolous work
About one-third of workers say they often have to do assignments that are simply a waste of time. Employees who have to do more of this meaningless work report greater feelings of being overwhelmed.

4. Always connected
Technology also led to feelings of overwork, with people being contacted by email, text, or cell outside of work. Those who dealt with work related issues away from the job were more likely to report being overworked.

What can you as a manager do about all this? Here are a few ideas.
1. Give workers more flexibility with their schedules, so they will be able to handle personal issues more easily.

2. Try allowing more employees to telecommute, which will give them more time.

3. Audit your workflow to determine how much unnecessary work is being done.

4. Prohibit the use of cell phones during meetings. This will enable people to conduct meetings more efficiently and more quickly.

5. Offer your workers training in time management – how to handle interruptions, how to eliminate procrastination, how to prioritize and schedule tasks.

6. Take vacation time. People report being more productive after taking time off.
