A Few Productivity Tips

Posted July 10th, 2017

Hundreds of books have been written about productivity. So, there is a lot of advice and information out there about how to enhance productivity. Some experts have culled through all of those books and winnowed out what they believe are the best tips on how to increase your productivity. Here are a few of them.

1. Set your own deadlines
Do not wait for deadlines to be imposed externally. Make your own deadlines if you really want to achieve, for work goals as well as your personal goals. Meeting external deadlines simply enables you to keep pace with your obligations. But if you really want to push yourself, go above and beyond, you need to create your own time frames.

As a corollary to this, always estimate how long something will take to do. This will give you a goal to work toward, completing the project in the allotted time. If it takes a lot longer than expected, you know you need to make adjustments. Also, remember the two-minute rule – if something takes less than two minutes to complete, do it now.

2. Watch your time
Keep a record of how much time you spend on your tasks. What you learn may surprise you. Time is our most valuable resource. We need to keep track of it as we do our money, so we know what we are spending it on and if we are wasting it.

3. Work on your strengths, rather than your weaknesses.
If something is a strength, that means you already have a good base of expertise and ability to begin from and your progress should be swift and sure. You can develop it into something really impressive.

4. Prioritize
You need to establish a priority ranking for the things you need to do. But do not rank tasks simply by when they are due or when you began them. Rank them by order of importance.

5. Don’t try to do too much at once
You need to do one thing at a time, break down large tasks into smaller units.

6. Assess how your day went
At the end of the day, take a little time to think about how it went – what things went well, what did not, and how things could be improved.

7. Know when to cut your losses
In other words, if a task is beginning to drag out, taking much longer than expected or than you think it should, it may be time to reconsider your approach or even the benefits of finishing the task. As tasks drag on, they are less likely to end well.
