Majoring in Renewable Energy: An Overview of Programs

Posted June 22nd, 2011

As business and industry are developing more interest in renewable energy, academia is not far behind. Anticipating increased demand for the technical and design skills that will be needed in the near future, colleges and universities across the country are adding courses and offering degree programs in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Many analysts predict that by 2020 the global clean energy economy will top one trillion dollars.

The Oregon Institute of Technology developed the country’s first four-year undergraduate degree program in renewable-energy systems back in 2005. In 2006, the State University of New York in Canton followed suit, offering a four-year degree program in alternative and renewable energy. Since then, the list of schools offering similar undergraduate and graduate degree programs has grown to include:

• Everglades University
• Illinois State University
• Stanford University
• Penn State
• Morrisville State College
• University of California, Berkeley
• Colorado School of Mines
• University of Central Florida
• Michigan Technological University
• The University of Toledo
• Lehigh University
• Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
• Allied American University
• Texas Tech University
• Humboldt State University: Environmental Resources Engineering
• John Brown University: Department of Renewable Energy
• North Carolina State University
• University of Delaware
• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
• University of Montana
• University of Nevada, Reno
• Virginia Tech: Center for Energy & the Global Environment

The U.S. Department of Energy maintains an Education and Professional Development page on their website that lists colleges, universities, community colleges and training centers that offer degrees or certificates for jobs in the renewable energy field. The Interstate Renewable Energy Council does the same.
