Rehiring a Former Employee

Posted April 24th, 2017

If you are a hiring manager, chances are good that you have come across a situation where someone who has left the company wants to return and has applied for a job. These types of situations are more common than in the past because workers are moving around more. So, the question that presents itself here is whether you should rehire a boomerang candidate or not.

The first thing to consider here is probably the most obvious – what kind of employee was the person when he or she worked at your company? Why did the person leave? Did the person have problems with his or her supervisor? Were there clashes and disagreements? Did the person leave because his performance was not up to par? Did the person not want to follow company policy? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, that pretty much tells you all you need to know and that you should take a pass.

On the other hand, if the person was a productive employee and left on good terms, there is no reason not to hire the person again. Here are some reasons why you might want to rehire the boomerang employee.

1. He or she is a known quantity.
You know what the person can do, and how he performs. Moreover, you know what kind of person he is, his personality and how he gets along with other people. You have actually seen the person in action on a daily basis. This is a lot more information than you have of any other job candidates, whom you have to evaluate mostly from resumes and interviews.

2. He can get right to work.
The boomerang candidate knows the job and the company and how things work at the company. He is familiar with how things are done. He does not need any hand holding or any orientation. He knows what the expectations are.

3. He can be a valuable addition to the company.
The boomerang candidate has presumably been working at another company or companies in your particular industry. During that time, he has picked up new knowledge and insights about your industry. He has had a chance to see how other companies operate, seen different ways of doing things. He has met people and learned from them. So, he brings all of this knowledge and experience with him, which can improve the operation of your company.
