Posted March 7th, 2017

At some point in most peoples’ IT careers, they will find themselves in a less than ideal job. In fact, many of these could even be considered bad. But bad tech job doesn’t mean it can’t serve a purpose, helping you forward your career into something better. In fact, it might be just what you need to move on to something brighter down the road. So, don’t dismiss a position as useless just because it doesn’t meet all of your needs. Instead, see it as a potentially valuable learning experience that can lead you to a better life.

Learn Balance

A bad job doesn’t tend to be very inspiring, and that means you are likely going to look elsewhere to find the level of satisfaction you need. If you have a hobby you love, and educational opportunity you’d like to pursue, or a side gig you want to get started, now may be the perfect time to take on a new challenge.

Typically, individuals working in bad jobs aren’t interested in taking their work home, which could mean you have more time available than you would otherwise. If so, work to find inspiration in your home or personal life. In the end, you might find the secret for reaching a work/life balance that actually makes you feel pretty good in the end. And it might even make you the envy of those who haven’t found a way to do the same.

Learn Perseverance

Even if you are working a bad IT job, you might not be able to jump ship right away, especially if you need to keep a paycheck coming. Since maintaining this positions is critical to your livelihood, you incidentally get the chance to learn something about perseverance. Dedicate yourself to doing your job and doing it well, even if you would rather be anywhere else.

But why give so much energy to the position? Because it will help you reach new opportunities in the future. By buckling down and just making it happen, you increase your chances of having positive employment reference or even finding new, more appealing, positions with your current employer. In some cases, if you stick it out, you may even see the source of your dissatisfaction leave the workplace as other employees leave or new ones join the team. Then, your once bad job might actually turn into something else.

Learn Optimism

Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies when it comes to a bad job. Learning to see the positive side of your employment, even in the smallest things, you might find it isn’t as bad as it once seemed. Look for opportunities to do or experience something enjoyable and practice letting go of the things that bring you down. In the end, you might be able to make your bad job at least feel tolerable, which is a relief on its own.
