How to Really Relax During Vacation
Posted May 12th, 2014
Summer is just about here, and with it, thoughts turn to vacation. But let’s face it, even when you are on vacation, your mind isn’t totally away from the office. One recent survey found that a majority of people actually do some work while on vacation. And, now that we carry our electronic devices around with us, it’s even more difficult not to press a few buttons to access email and find out what is going on at work.
But at the same time, when you are on vacation, you want to relax as well, and really be on vacation. So, what is the best course to follow, to really relax while at the same time not completely losing touch with the office?
Come up with a practical vacation strategy.
It’s not very practical to plan to start a diet right before the holidays, so don’t do the equivalent when you leave for vacation. Come up with a practical strategy for how you are going to deal with communication with the office and adhere to it.
You will probably be communicating with your office through email, and the longer you are away, the more probable it is that you will be emailing. The important thing here is that you come up with a plan as to when exactly you will be emailing and whom you will be contacting. And you need to make sure everyone else in the office knows these things as well. So, if someone in the office wants to reach you, they will be more likely to go through your contact first, rather than trying to contact you directly if they know who and when you will be emailing.
Another practice that is important during vacation is that you really stick to the schedule you have set up when contacting work. If you say you are going to do it every other day at a certain time, be sure that is when you do it. Otherwise, again, you will have people trying to contact you directly at other times during the day.
It is also a good idea to check emails during times when no one is at work. That way you won’t be drawn into any conversations. Also, and this should be fairly obvious, vacation is not the time to begin any new initiatives at work, so don’t raise any new issues while away. And finally, if there is an emergency at work, do whatever you must to handle it, rather than let it get out of hand.
