Self-Reflection and Work Performance

Posted March 13th, 2017

Self-reflection is a concept that is gaining a great deal of momentum in business circles these days. There is really nothing complicated or arcane about it. Many of us engage in self-reflection when dealing with the challenges we face every day.
But it is something that executive coaches and business experts are recommending to their clients. They do this because it can help in fostering professional growth.

But real self-reflection involves more than just pondering your goals and decisions, although it certainly is that. It is about analyzing your beliefs and actions in order to gain insight and knowledge about yourself and how you are performing. It is an opportunity to take a break from the rush of events, to gain some time and perspective, and to find a meaning to all that you have done.

Finding this meaning is a form of learning, which then helps with professional growth.

Research shows how effective self –reflection can be. Call center employees who spent just 15 minutes reflecting each day for 10 days performed 25 percent better than those who did no reflection. Other studies have shown that people who reflect report being happier at their jobs and more productive.

If being reflective is something you are having difficulty doing, or are avoiding,, here are a few ideas to help.

1. Come up with some questions to think about.
For example, you can reflect on what you are avoiding, how you are helping or hindering your coworkers, how you might have been more effective at a meeting or on a project.

2. Reflect in a way that is comfortable for you
For example, you might enjoy writing down your thoughts in a journal as you reflect, or you might enjoy talking out things with a friend instead. Some people reflect better when they are walking or running.

3. Schedule time to reflect
Block out time in your schedule that you will devote just to self-reflection, and stick to it. If you are still avoiding it, reflect on why you are doing that.

4. Take small steps
If reflecting more than a few minutes is uncomfortable for you, then start with that and work your way up.

Remember, this is a process of exploration, of looking at things from different angles and new perspectives.
