How to Punch Up Your Blog
Posted June 23rd, 2014
With social media as prominent as it is today, many people are using this platform to help their careers. It has become a tool for networking and for displaying professional expertise. One way that people showcase their expertise is by writing a blog.
The question is, how can you make the best use of your blog? How can you get people to read it, not only maintaining an audience but attracting new readers? Here are some steps you can take to ensure you have readers coming to your blog.
1. Know who you are writing for.
Before you even begin writing, you need to think about who you are writing for. Is it a more general audience, for example, or a group of professionals? This will determine your style, tone and content. Who are the people who would be most interested in what you have to say?
2. Watch your length.
Blogging is a medium for writing that is shorter and pithier. If you ramble on for too long, you risk losing your reader. If you make posts too short, however, your readers might not feel they are worth reading. Generally, somewhere between 400 and 700 words is a good average for blog posting. But again, much of this will depend on who your audience is.
3. Put tags on your posts.
Tagging is important because it will give your readers a way to find their way around your site, locating specific articles that are of interest to them. It will also give readers a way to find your site if they are looking for a topic that you write about.
Be careful how you tag as well. Make sure the tag is describing the main idea of the post. This will help to bring more readers to your site.
4. Get your readers involved.
This will really help to give your blog some life and add to its relevance and punch. You can do this by asking your readers what they would like to read about, or by putting some other kinds of surveys on your site.
Also, take the time to occasionally respond to comments that readers leave. This is another way of engaging with your audience and getting them involved.
5. Keep track of your traffic.
Most blog platforms have built in tools which collect information about the site, such as how many visitors it has had, most read articles, and what search terms people use to access the site. By keeping tabs on this data, you can find out what is popular and what is not, which will help you to further fine tune your site.
