How to Enhance Productivity
Posted January 2nd, 2017
Being productive is not always about how much you get done. Quality matters as well. But it’s not just about quality either. You are naturally aiming for both. That means learning how best to approach your work to get the most done and do it well.
Here are a few tips.
1. Do the most important thing first.
This may sound like common sense, but people often neglect to follow this advice. They want to take care of easier things first to build momentum, or they do other projects thinking they have plenty of time to get to everything.
So, you need to prioritize. That involves distinguishing between the urgent and important, figuring out what tasks are the most important to your company as well, and determining how long each task is going to take.
2. Get enough sleep.
This is something many people don’t do. If they have a lot of work, the first thing that goes is sleep. But this is taking a very shortsighted view since scientific research has proven the value of sleep in being productive. A lack of sleep has the same effect as drinking alcohol. It’s important for many other reasons as well — focus, memory, and learning, to name a few. Get seven to eight hours.
3. Get up early.
Research has shown that mornings are the most productive part of the day. It is the time when we are the most alert and have the most energy. So, it would make sense to get the most out of the morning, and to do that you need to get up early.
4. Focus
That means cutting out as many distractions as you can. Close your email and any websites you don’t need. Devote your full attention to the task at hand.
5. Avoid perfectionism
For routine tasks, it’s more important to get them done than to make sure they are perfect.
6. Manage your time
For each task, you should schedule a certain amount of time. There are many apps and online tools to help you do this. By setting a certain amount of time for your tasks, it will help you to better manage your time during the day.
7. Take breaks
Taking breaks is important. The human mind can focus intensely for about an hour at a time. Then it needs a break. Taking breaks helps you to rest and recharge, so that you return to work with fresh energy. So, every hour, get away from your desk and move around a little.
