Mornings – The Most Productive Time of the Day
Posted December 19th, 2016
Are you a morning person? If not, it may be time to become one. If you want to really get things done, to be at your most productive, you need to make good use of your mornings. This is backed up by scientific research.
The way we structure our workday now – 9 to 5 – it is easy to fall into the mindset that we have plenty of time to get things done, almost eight hours. But we are naturally more productive at certain times of the day.
What research has shown is that the best time to get things done is the first three hours of the day. This is when we are most alert and energetic, when our willpower is strongest. As you move through the day, your energy level begins to decline, making it harder for you to concentrate.
So, to take advantage of this natural energy and alertness, you need to develop a morning routine where you focus on getting the most work and the hardest work done. Don’t waste these precious hours with things like browsing through your email or chatting with coworkers. Get busy. Do your most challenging work in the morning, and save the more routine and mundane matters for later in the day. This time then actually becomes more of a recovery time.
To get the most out of your morning, you first need to get a good night’s sleep – seven to eight hours. Then here is how to structure your morning.
1. Get up as early as you can.
This lengthens your morning, giving you more time to get your work done and be productive. Getting up earlier may at first be a little more difficult, but if you stick to your routine, it will soon become a habit.
2. Eat a good breakfast.
You need to eat a breakfast that is rich in protein because protein helps you to better regulate your blood-sugar levels, so you don’t have any stomach rumblings later on.
3. Stay away from the caffeine.
Experts say it is better to wake up naturally.
4. Meditate
Set aside a brief time to meditate, say about 15 minutes. This will also help you to focus and clear your mind.
5. Cut out any distractions
One of the reasons for getting up earlier is to avoid the distractions that crop up later in the day, so don’t create any. Check email and surf the web later. Focus just on the work you need to get done.
