How to Resign the Right Way

Posted May 8th, 2017

If you have taken a new job, you are going to have to resign from the one you have now. Here are some tips on how to do it the right way – a way that shows your character and professionalism.

1. Finalize details.
Before you do anything about resigning, make sure you have everything worked out with your new employer, all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed. For example, make sure the employment contract is signed, benefits package in place, and start date determined.

2. Plan for the transfer
Come up with a plan for how your duties and responsibilities will be moved, a transition plan for the work you are currently doing. You don’t want to just dump a lot of unfinished work in your supervisor’s lap.

3. Write your letter of resignation
Make sure to include your appreciation for the opportunity to work at the company and your last day on the job.

4. Your explanation
In other words, rehearse how you will talk about your leaving to your colleagues and supervisor. Why you decided to take the new job.

5. Inform your supervisor
You should tell your supervisor before anyone else. And also prepare your strategy if your supervisor should make a counter offer.

6. Do it face to face
Resign in person, and hand in your letter of resignation at that time.

7. Give enough notice
Two weeks is the general amount of time for people to give notice about leaving a job. However, if your job is one with additional responsibilities, you may want to give notice even earlier.

8. Stay professional
Do your best work right up until the last day. Stay on good terms with everyone. This is not the time to vent about any dissatisfaction you had with the job. It is best to keep your options open in case you ever want to return to the company, as well as ensuring that you get a good reference.

9. Personal items
Don’t start packing up until after you have informed your supervisor that you are leaving. Make sure your workspace is in good condition and cleaned up for the next person.

10. Update your social media site
Keep your profile on social media up to date.
