Protect Yourself from These Common Workplace Injuries
Posted September 20th, 2016
Workplace injuries can be a serious pain, and not just physically. Injuries at work can leave you stuck, unable to complete a variety of daily activities while you heal. In severe cases, the results can be life altering, or even deadly.
If you want to protect yourself from some of the most common workplace injuries, consider the tips below:
Overexertion
By far, the most common injury that led to missed time at work are strains, sprains, and tears caused by overexertion. These most often occur while handling workplace materials. For example, improper lifting or lowering techniques can lead to a back injury. This is especially true for items being picked up from, or set down to, ground level. Injuries can also occur when retrieving items from overhead, such as off of a high shelf. Even picking up materials from a comfortable height can lead to injury if the weight is underestimated.
Proper lifting technique is the key to preventing many of these injuries. Make sure that you use proper form, and have your legs do most of the work. If you have concerns about the weight involved, consider finding a coworker for a team lift. For items that are marked for a team lift, do not attempt to pick up the item alone.
Repetitive Motion
Even if you use proper technique, repeating a motion through the day can also lead to injuries. For example, carpal tunnel can be a repetitive motion injury sustained through high levels of computer use. To combat these injuries, make sure to take regular breaks. Shake out any muscle group that is being worked the same way. Engaging in stretching can also alleviate some of the strain.
Slips and Trips
Whether it is something lying on the ground or a slippery floor, slips and trips are also a common cause of injury. The best way to avoid these injuries is to simply be aware of your environment. Pay attention to what is around you, and follow company guidelines regarding spill cleanups. If an item on the floor poses a hazard, be sure to return it to its proper place immediately. Keep an eye on shoelaces and any other equipment that may come loose.
Falls from Elevation
While slips and trips occur at ground level, a fall occurs from a height. This includes falls from ladders, off of roofs, and down stairways. As with slips and trips, increased situational awareness is a key component to reducing the risk of injury. If certain job duties require specialty safety equipment to lessen the risk, make sure to use it properly, and use it every time you complete the task.
Falling Objects
Objects falling from overhead can cause serious injuries. Items may become dislodged during the course of the workday, leaving them precariously perched until finally falling. At other times, a quick movement accidentally knocks and item out of place. Situational awareness can help prevent these injuries by identifying potential risks and correcting them in a timely fashion. Additionally, safety equipment, such as a hard hat, can limit the severity of an injury should an object fall.
You Are the First Line of Defense
To limit your risk of industry, you must rely on yourself first. Make sure you follow all safety procedures, and be aware of your surroundings. If you spot a hazard, either address it or report to the person who can. By being vigilant, you can protect yourself from workplace injuries more effectively.
