Types of Jobs Available for Manufacturers

Posted August 28th, 2014

Manufacturing is a more varied sector than it gets credit for. To produce even the smallest ,simplest objects, a whole team of expert professionals has to work according to exacting standards and with extreme precision. If you think that manufacturing is all about the endless repetition of mindless tasks, you are mistaken. These are four professional career paths that are available for manufacturers:

Operations Manager

It is the duty of operations managers to oversee the entire manufacturing process. They combine strong technical skills with a keen business sense to ensure that manufacturing process run efficiently, economically, safely, and according to the goals of the company. Operations managers wear many hats and spend as much time on the factory floor as in an office. This is typically an upper-level position that is filled by a seasoned manufacturing professional.

Manufacturing Engineer

A manufacturing engineer is a very specific type of engineer whose specialty is the development and optimization of manufacturing processes. Today’s manufacturing plants are extremely complicated, fast-paced, and interconnected, and it is the job of manufacturing engineers to design systems that can accommodate the pace, volume, and complexity. It is their duty to oversee broad manufacturing process, and also to troubleshoot problems in specific pieces of equipment or in isolated parts of a system.

Machinists

Machinists used highly-technical skills and specialized tools to make and modify the components of machines. They are a crucial part of any manufacturing process because if a machine breaks down or needs to be altered in some way, they can perform the work on site rather than having to turn to the original manufacturer. In manufacturing, halting production for even a few hours can have a disastrous affect on the bottom line, so machinists are kept on staff to respond to problems as soon as they arrive.

Quality Control Monitors

In manufacturing, every item that rolls off the production line must be identical and free of flaws. Ensuring this level of consistency is the job of quality control monitors. They create standards for evaluation, define efficient methods for evaluating quality quickly and reliably, and then handle or manage the inspection of each item. In some cases this process is automated, and in others it involves a comprehensive hands-on inspection.

A career in manufacturing can be intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding. And despite some of the dire predictions made about the future of American manufacturing, there are manufacturing positions in South San Fran and all over the country available now, and there will be for long into the future.
