How to Survive in the 21st Century Job Market

Posted July 11th, 2016

In the 21st Century, we are accumulating knowledge faster than ever. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. The world has become ever more interconnected. It can make your head spin. It can also make you wonder about your job security.

Will your job even be around ten or fifteen years from now? Will it be outsourced, computerized, obsolete? As the pace of change accelerates, you just cannot be sure. So, how does one stay a step ahead in the whirlwind job market of the 21st Century? Here are some things you should be doing to make sure you are not on the outside looking in.

1. Keep your antenna out.
You may be happy in your current job. You may like your work. But that doesn’t mean you should be complacent. You need to be proactive and stay up with current events and trends in your industry. Even though you may not be looking for a job, you need to act as if it may be a possibility, to be ready for change if and when it comes.

2. Keep learning
In today’s business world, learning never stops, and so you should never stop learning. You need to be adding to your skills. Again, keeping an eye on trends in your industry should give you some indication of the skills you need. Also, keeping up with changes in technology should give you some indication of what computer skills might be helpful.

3. Keep your documents up to date, electronic and otherwise.
This applies to your resume and online profiles such as LinkedIn. Keep them current. Don’t allow them to gather dust. You need to routinely work on these documents to make sure they accurately reflect your current skills, knowledge and experience. You never know when a recruiter might be looking at your site.

Also, by constantly updating your materials, you will get an idea of how your career is progressing, whether you are moving ahead at the pace you want to or just stagnating.

4. Network
Again, this is something you should be doing even if you are not looking for a job. By keeping in touch with others in your field, you will find out not only about job opportunities, but glean ideas about how to do your job better, learn more about your profession, and keep up with trends in your field.
