Top Paying Majors for the Class of 2012
Posted June 11th, 2012
If you’ve recently graduated from college with a degree in the computer science, good for you. You’ve just completed a degree in one of the top-earning college majors of 2012.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers, recently completed a survey of those graduates this year who’ve already landed gainful employment in their majors. Computer science majors reported a first-year starting salary average of $58,300, a tidy sum in any economy. If this is you, congratulations!
Did you major in the sciences? More specifically “construction science/management”? Then you’re sitting in the catbird seat making $54,700 annually.
Business majors who focused on economics (business/managerial) are earning a median starting salary of $54,800.
These salaries are a good 25 percent higher than the average starting salary for members of the Class of 2012: $44,442, with the lowest of the highest 10 majors (humanities and social sciences with an emphasis on political science/government studies) earning $38,400.
But the winners? That would be this year’s computer engineering grads. These hard-working (and prescient-as-freshmen) individuals are making a median first-year salary of $67,800. (We suggest they take all of us out to lunch to celebrate.)
Compare these to occupations featured in a recent Careerbuilder.com blog post that described six of the most in-demand jobs and their median salaries nationwide:
- CDL Truck Driver: $44,500
- CNC Machinist: $48,000
- Account Executive (sales): $85,000
- Net Developer: $85,000
- Financial Analyst: $65,500
- Case manager (healthcare): $68,000
Some, such as the truck driver and even the account executive don’t require any post-secondary education. The machinist requires some technological training. Yet only three of the six require an actual degree from a four-year college or university.
