Employees Like Working Remotely
Posted May 9th, 2016
A recent survey of people who work remotely produced some surprising results. It seems that working remotely is a situation that many people like. An employee engagement company surveyed more than 500 remote workers in the United States and compared their answers to more than 200,000 other workers in traditional work environment.
The survey found:
1. People who work remotely report greater satisfaction with their jobs.
On a scale of 1 to 10, remote workers recorded a slightly higher score than those in traditional work arrangements, citing the freedom and flexibility that they had.
2. People who work remotely feel that the company recognizes their worth more.
Remote workers recorded a slightly higher score here than others. They said they do feel valued at work, even though they lack the closeness that goes with traditional office work.
3. People who work remotely believe that they are more productive.
And they believe this by a very large margin. More than nine out of ten remote workers said that they get more work done when they work remotely. The fact that employees are rating their own performance needs to be taken into account here, but the considerable percentage of workers responding appears to be significant.
4. People who work remotely report still having close contact with supervisors.
It appears that working remotely does not negatively impact communication between workers and managers. More than half of those who work remotely report that they talk with supervisors at least one time a day or more. One-third of remote workers report contact at least one time a week. And 10 percent reported contact one time a month.
Management experts emphasize that communication becomes all the more important when employees work remotely, and that accounts for the large percentage of workers who report contact one or more times a day. It is a necessity for those not working in the traditional office environment.
Also, it is even more important that managers set clear goals and expectations for remote workers. Since managers are not present to check on workers and what they are doing, goals and deadlines take on added importance.
