Recruiting Problems: It May Not Be the Candidates
Posted July 22nd, 2013
Some IT companies routinely seem to have trouble finding the right person for their open positions. They have trouble recruiting people, they have to do job searches more than once for the same opening, and applicants are often rejected by hiring managers.
If this sounds familiar, there are ways to remedy the problem.
One thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t do more than one job search for an opening. Once will do. And if the search produces three or four good candidates, one of them should be hired. If that is not happening, there are other problems that need to be looked at.
The problem most likely is not with the applicants but someplace else in the organization. The problem might be that the hiring managers are not certain what they really want or not sure how to locate the best person for the job. If this is the situation, it may help to use performance profiles instead of only job descriptions.
Another reason you might be having difficulty finding people is a flawed interviewing process. Hiring managers may not be skilled enough at conducting effective interviews.
Too often, hiring managers make decisions based on initial impressions, and this is where they can err. Often, these first impressions aren’t very good indicators of a person’s true abilities and qualifications. Interviewers need to suspend judgment until they have thoroughly questioned each candidate so that the interviewer can make a more informed decision.
Another problem might be that the hiring managers are just being unrealistic about the qualifications they want. They might be looking for a combination of skills and abilities that no one person has. Other difficulties might be that the company itself really doesn’t have the best of reputations as a worker friendly environment, or that the salary being offered isn’t on a par with other employers.
Or the company may be misjudging the market for talent, assuming that there are plenty of qualified candidates out there, when in reality there are really few.
The company should be hiring about one-fourth of all the candidates that are interviewed, according to human resource experts. If the company is hiring fewer than this, something is wrong somewhere.
