How to Handle Growth Spurts
Posted February 1st, 2016
If your business is growing, you are probably doing a good deal of hiring. If so, you want to make all of your new people receive a proper welcome and have a good onboarding experience. You want to make sure they get acclimated to your company culture. Here are a few ways to do this.
1. Welcoming begins even before they arrive.
Some companies send out a welcome kits even before the new person begins work. These companies realize that the person has made a big commitment, leaving his or her current job and possibly moving a great distance. The welcome kit essentially tells the new person how happy the company leadership is to have them join the firm, and what he or she will be doing on his or her first day.
2. Publicize your brand
Most onboarding covers things like policies, procedures and benefits. In addition to this, however, bringing a new person onboard is also an opportunity to develop the company’s brand. The onboarding process should include a review of the company’s history and what it represents. Employees are the best ambassadors of any company, so they need to understand what the company represents, its brand, so they can be effective in their ambassadorial roles.
3. Train
If you are making a lot of new hires, chances are there are a number of people moving up the chain of command into managerial positions. For some, this may be a new experience, and they may not have all of the skills needed to manage efficiently. So, the company needs to train these people to ensure they will be successful in their new jobs.
4. Know your people
Good managers get to know their team not just as employees but as human beings. Managers find out about the employee’s interests, family, and what is happening in his or her life. This makes the worker feel like more than just a cog in a machine. When you recognize employees, tailor the award to their interests to show how they are valued. For example, give them tickets to see their favorite sports team or to their favorite restaurant.
5. Have fun.
You also need to do things to keep employees motivated. You may be busy, but you should build into the day some quick fun things to do.
