How to Keep Your Best IT People

Posted May 23rd, 2016

It’s something you have to work at because good IT people are in demand, especially those working in mobile app development and IT networking. Company leadership needs to make retention a major goal of the company, and that means giving IT workers the opportunity to add to their skills and advance.

Here are some tips on how to keep the best and brightest.

1. Pay them what they are worth.
At the very least, you need to keep your salaries on a par with the competition or you will lose people. Salary isn’t the only thing that matters to these employees, but if they feel they are not being paid what they are worth, they won’t stick around.

2. Give them new opportunities.
Like most people, top workers want new challenges to keep things interesting. They want to learn more and gain more knowledge and add to their skills. You need to give them the opportunity to do this. Even if you cannot promote them, you should give them additional responsibilities, new areas to explore.

3. Show that you value learning.
As part of giving people new opportunities, you want to encourage them to increase their knowledge as well. If you can, reimburse to the extent that you can people who attend educational seminars, or take classes, or attend conferences or who gain new IT certifications.
If your employees see that you value continuing learning and education, it will help retain them.

4. Provide good benefits.
This is more than a good healthcare plan or retirement plan. Find out what the employees want and see if you can provide it. Do they want more flexible schedules, or the opportunity to work remotely? Do they want on-site day care or wellness programs? Do they want paid time off?

5. Prevent burnout
Keep the lines of communication open so that you are getting feedback from employees about their workload and whether it is becoming too much to handle. Consider bringing in contingent workers to handle temporary spikes in the workload.

Also, you need to maintain good communication to keep your finger on the pulse of employee morale and what their mood is. If there are problems brewing, find out what they are and take care of them before they grow.
