How to Handle the Boomerang Job Candidate

Posted June 8th, 2015

Years ago, employees would remain with the same company throughout their careers. But that is no longer the case. In the search for new and different opportunities and challenges, workers are moving around much more than in the past. This is especially true of the Millennials.

This in turn has given rise to a new phenomenon in the business world – boomerang job candidates. These are people who have left a firm, worked elsewhere for part of their career, and then applied for a job at the same firm they left. This raises some issues for employers.

Should they hire these people again? To answer that question, you first need to be aware of why they left. If it was because of some conflict with a supervisor, other people, or some disagreement with the way things were done, you might want to think twice about rehiring the person, unless the situation has been rectified. But if the person left to pursue new opportunities, and was generally a good employee, there are a number of advantages to rehiring a boomerang job candidate.

1. You know their history.
Since the person has worked at your company, you should have a pretty good idea of his or her strengths and weaknesses, what kind of worker he is. You know that the person is a good fit with the company, having worked here before. And you can learn more from the people who have worked with the person.

2. They will require less training.
The person will already know the processes and procedures at your company. He or she also won’t need much in the way of onboarding, so he will be ready to hit the ground running.

3. Their turnover rate is actually lower than other job candidates.
Why is that? First of all, they pretty much know what to expect at your company since they have worked there before and enjoyed the experience. There will be fewer surprises. But there is another reason as well – they chose to come back knowing what else is available out there. They have decided what you have to offer is better than anything else out there.

4. They can boost your company’s performance.
They can do this in two ways. First, they might bring with them any clients or customers they picked up after they left. Second, they will also bring with them the insights they have gained from working at other places.
