How to Enhance Cybersecurity

Posted April 3rd, 2017

Whether a business is large or small, in the digital age, protecting data has become extremely important. Losing information can mean losing money, sometimes a lot of it. So, businesses are taking precautions to enhance their cybersecurity.

Here are some things to keep in mind to protect your electronic data.

1. Find out where the threats are coming from.
Sometimes the threat may be internal, in the form of a leak, when the company has not spelled out what data is confidential and what is not. So, employees may end up sharing sensitive information through social media, email, or other means. Information can also be compromised when mobile devices are lost or stolen.

Other threats come from hackers and malware. Everyone is now aware of the damage hackers can do, as news of stolen information pops up in the news more frequently, stories of hackers gaining access to millions of online accounts thought to be secure.

But hackers can strike in a number of ways, using denial of service attacks, wiping out data, even encrypting hard drives and demanding a ransom to restore them.

2. Establish who can access sensitive data
You need to determine which employees should be able to access confidential information, and who should not. IT experts recommend that full access to sensitive data should be highly restricted.

3. Get data encryption
This has become a necessity. Data encryption software should be used for servers, computers and laptops. Naturally, the more prominent your business is, the more crucial having encryption software becomes.

4. Use effective passwords
Passwords are under constant attack from hackers, so it is important to make them as strong as possible.
Cybersecurity experts recommend that passwords have more than eight characters, and they should include upper and lowercase letters, little used characters such as #, $, !, or /, and numbers.

If you are someone who has access to the most restricted data, you should not use the same password for all data sources. And passwords should be changed each quarter.

5. Keep your software current
Hackers are always hard at work developing new strains of malware, so you need to make sure your cybersecurity software has the latest updates.
