How to Streamline the Hiring Process
Posted December 1st, 2014
You have been given the green light to go ahead and hire someone for a position at the company. That you are glad to hear. The problem is, one more thing has just been put on your already crowded plate. How will you find the time to supervise a hiring process while at the same time continuing to do your regular job?
It will be a challenge – there is no way around that. But there are a few things you can do to make the hiring process go more smoothly and efficiently, and, hopefully, quickly.
1. Organization is key.
Hiring is a process. It involves many different steps – coming up with a job description, posting the position, looking at resumes, doing interviews.
Moreover, there are different people and departments involved. You need to work with the HR department, your supervisor, and your team as well. So, with all of these moving parts to handle, you need to make sure you are organized.
You need to approach it like any project and do proper planning. Whether you make a timeline, a checklist, a work plan, or whatever other tools you use, put together a plan to make sure you keep up with the work. Set up benchmarks and due dates, and make sure all of your deadlines are posted on your calendar.
2. Set aside some time every day to work on hiring.
Initially, you won’t need a lot of time. You will need to keep in touch with HR during the initial stages. However, later, as you begin receiving resumes, you will need to make sure to carve out time in your schedule so that you can begin reviewing them. Things will become even more time intensive as you begin reviewing work samples, scheduling and conducting interviews, and consulting with colleagues. If you don’t schedule time for this, it will quickly get away from you.
3. Observe deadlines religiously.
With something like a hiring search, it is easy to let deadlines slide in favor of other more pressing concerns. But once you begin doing this, there is a snowball effect, where the entire process gets balled up, and chaos quickly ensues.
4. Work closely with human resources.
They can help you immeasurably. First of all, they have a better idea of what the applicant pool looks like, what kind of responses you are likely to get. So, they will have a better knowledge of how to frame the job advertisement to get the best response.
HR will also be familiar with the internal process when it comes to hiring – where the bottlenecks and gatekeepers are.
