Things You Should Have on Your Resume — But May Not

Posted November 24th, 2014

Conventional wisdom regarding resumes usually counsels keeping them short, no longer than one page. Given that hiring managers or human resource departments don’t spend a lot of time looking at them, at least initially, this is for the most part fairly sound advice. But don’t let this generalization keep you from putting important activities on your resume, namely, activities that you do outside your job.

These days, employers look at more than just a resume. They will also look to see if an applicant has a website. So, if you have developed a professional website, you should include a link to it on your resume. In addition, if you blog about your area of professional expertise, you should include information about that on your resume as well.

Another thing you should include on your resume is a link to your social media sites. This will also give an indication to a potential employer of your influence in your industry.

Also, if you have done any freelance or consulting work, you should include that on your resume as well. It will also help to give an employer a better idea of your skills and accomplishments.

Don’t forget to include any special recognition or awards you have received. Certifications that have been earned in a specialized area should be included as well.

Any other ventures that you have been involved in that are related to your work should be one the resume. For example, have you published anything, either in print or in electronic media? Have you started any businesses on your own?

Also, include volunteer work on your resume. If, for example, you help out at a local food bank, or coach a little league team, you should put that on your resume. If you have done any volunteer work in your area of expertise, that naturally should be included on the resume.

Highlighting volunteer work shows employers that you have initiative and drive, plus leadership and management skills.
