For example, a senior research chemists can expect to earn approximately $110K a year, while the average research chemist can expect to earn $72K, However, there are greater variations that depend on population, cost of living, and general competitive for open jobs. According to Salary.com, research chemists’ salaries are:

  • Bay Area (Peninsula) – salaries range from $93,000 – $144,000 (for senior research chemist)
  • Bakersfield – salaries range from $56,000 – $88,000 (for senior research chemist)
  • Sacramento – salaries range from $68,000 – $106,000 (for senior research chemist)
  • LA salaries range from $71,000 – $110,000 (for senior research chemist)
