How to Step into Your Career in California Green Tech
Posted March 25th, 2014
Green jobs are cool, and they are growing. Many people have discovered that a green lifestyle keeps them energized (because they feel that they are doing something to protect the environment) and healthier. But can you turn this lifestyle into a vibrant career? You sure can. Here are four tips to help you do just that.
1. Know where your passion lies.
Green jobs are defined as any career that helps restore, protect or sustain the natural environment. That is expansive and far-ranging, so before you begin the job search process, figure out where exactly your interest is. If you are not sure, recognize how you feel when you discuss a particular topic. Is that solar? Wind? Construction? Technology? You will enjoy your career (and succeed more) if you aim for a job that actually interests you.
2. Make sure you fully understand your area of interest
You may be passionate about a particular area, but you still need to be able to highlight your expertise. Learn the language. The best way to learn the most current terms, buzzwords and ideas is to read blogs, publications, and talk to other people in the industry. However, don’t go too far. An overuse of jargon can indicate a lack of knowledge. You do not want to appear as if you are simply throwing around buzzwords, without knowing the meaning behind them.
3. Know what you need to make
On average, green jobs do offer a higher median income than other fields. However, the word “average” can be misleading. Green jobs can run the spectrum from minimum wage jobs to high-paying positions. Do your research; know what you need to earn to sustain your standard of living.
4. Align your interest with available opportunities
Just because you are passionate about something you want, it does not mean that you will get it. Once you have identified your area of interest, analyze what jobs are available and what you will need to do to land one of them. Acquiring extra education or certifications might be needed. A specialized green degree might be needed. Doing so will give you the skills that you need to land your next, great job. If you have a passion for making the world better for future generations, studying and creating a green career path may be just what you need.
