Top 5 LinkedIn Groups to Join as a Green Tech Pro

Posted January 23rd, 2014

Networking is a crucial component of your job search strategy, especially if you want to transition to a new job in the growing field of green technology. One of the easiest and quickest ways to begin networking is to join a LinkedIn Group focused on this area. Here are the top 5 LinkedIn Groups to join:

  1. Green. This group is not strictly for job seekers; it is for those who want to share ideas on environment, climate change, renewable energy, clean tech, sustainability, etc. This group has over 173,000 members, with a large portion of them residing / working in the Bay Area or Los Angeles.
  2. Renewables Job Market. This group works as a global marketplace for HR professionals (seeking talent) or green tech professionals (seeking positions) in the areas of renewable energy, recycling, sustainability, etc.
  3. Wind Energy Professionals. This networking group was established for wind energy professionals focused on the areas of turbine production, R&D, logistics, wind assessment, etc. It has over 58,000 professionals…most of them residing overseas in Denmark, England, and Spain.
  4. Solar Energy Professionals. This group is for solar energy professionals in direct or related fields. It has over 61,000 members with the largest portion residing in the San Francisco Bay area.
  5. Green Jobs and Career Network. This group was established for those who work in (or are interested in) green technology jobs (i.e. CSR, green business, renewable energy, cleantech, etc.).

All of these sites are private, which means that you have to be approved for membership. To request membership, send a request to the designated as “group manager”.

Many of these groups in the area of green tech – such as Green – are not designed for job seekers. They are groups where like-minded individuals can share ideas and information. However, employers and recruiters do join these groups as well. They are looking for “thought leaders” ….for people well-versed in the nuisances of the green technology arena. If you are active then employers and recruiters can find you. The key is to keep a high profile. Many of these groups have 10’s of thousands of members, so the more you contribute, the sooner you will be noticed and perhaps contacted.
