Green Tech Jobs – How BITES Works
Posted May 17th, 2013
Thanks to growing awareness and an increasing sense of responsibility for the environment, corporate greening efforts have never been stronger. Companies in industries across the board are making a concerted effort to bolster the environment by decreasing their carbon footprint. But sometimes it’s hard to know which efforts are just well-meaning, and which efforts can actually have a big impact. Enter the new Building, Industry, Transportation, Electricity Scenarios (BITES) tool from the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).
Customizable Scenarios
Originally developed to help strategic planning efforts for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, BITES is an interactive tool that lets users input various “what-if” scenarios, and then calculate the energy/environmental impact. Factors that are analyzed include energy generation, transportation fuel use, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Actionable Results
“For instance, someone could calculate how much energy could be saved by making homes and businesses more efficient,” says NREL analyst Austin Brown, in a BITES press release. “They could also look at how much petroleum could be saved by making cars, trucks and planes more efficient.” Another scenario allows facilities managers to evaluate how new policies or equipment at a manufacturing facility could affect factory emissions. Once users have the results of their scenarios, they can decide which course(s) of action best fits their green goals. One caveat: BITES doesn’t generate cost savings, only energy impact – although cost savings could be extrapolated from the results.
Using BITES allows government and corporate energy users to help enact policies that align with energy consumption and climate security goals. Other users of BITES include professors and students involved in energy sustainability research. By choosing the “public” option instead of “private” when generating scenarios, users allow others interested in good green practices to look at their results and chime in with comments or suggestions of their own. Such “crowd-sourcing” taps into a wider experience pool, and can bring additional valuable insights.
