Research Associate II - Biochemistry
W2 Contract
Location: South San Francisco, CA - Onsite Role
Job Summary:
We are seeking a Research Associate for a contract assignment to support our biochemistry and biology teams. Reporting to the Sr. Scientist, Biochemistry Lead, this individual will play a key role in characterizing peptide-target interactions and building the assay infrastructure that drives our discovery engine. This individual will work across biochemical and biophysical platforms, partnering closely with chemistry and biology teams to advance our pipeline from hit identification through lead optimization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and execute plate-based biochemical binding and activity assays (e.g., AlphaScreen, HTRF, FP) to assess macrocyclic peptide interactions with oncology targets.
- Perform biophysical characterization experiments (e.g., SPR, BLI, nanoDSF) to determine binding affinity, kinetics, and thermal stability.
- Evaluate peptide selectivity against related family members and off-target proteins to support SAR interpretation.
- Deploy liquid handling automation (e.g., Echo, Bravo, Formulatrix) to scale throughput and improve data reproducibility.
- Implement rigorous data quality control practices and contribute to the development of assay performance metrics and acceptance criteria.
- Maintain detailed, accurate records in the electronic lab notebook (ELN) and contribute to internal scientific reports and presentations.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with chemistry and biology teams to align on experimental priorities and communicate results effectively.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. in biochemistry, chemical biology, molecular biology, or a related discipline
- 2-5 years of industry experience in a biochemistry or biophysics laboratory setting
- Hands-on experience with microplate-format assays in 96- or 384-well formats
- Experience with at least one biophysical binding technique (SPR, BLI, nanoDSF, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated ability to execute, optimize, and troubleshoot assay protocols with a high degree of rigor and reproducibility
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience running structured screening campaigns and applying assay development best practices
- Familiarity with liquid handling platforms (Echo, Bravo, Tempest)
- Experience working with recombinant proteins, including an understanding of protein complex stability and quality assessment
- Exposure to competitive binding assay formats (e.g., TR-FRET displacement, fluorescence polarization)
