How Should I Reschedule My Job Interview?
Posted May 21st, 2019
Landing an interview is always exciting. You set the day and time with the hiring manager and prepare to start your journey to possibly getting a job offer. But, sometimes, something else makes attending the interview impossible. Maybe you fall ill or have an emergency that requires your attention.
Regardless of the reason, rescheduling an interview can feel like a daunting task, especially if you are very interested in the role. Luckily, there is a way to go about it that will make it more likely that the hiring manager will work with you. If you need to reschedule an interview, here’s what you need to do.
Have a Good Reason
Rescheduling an interview isn’t something you can do on a whim. Unless you can offer the hiring manager an incredibly good reason, they likely won’t adjust their schedule to accommodate your request.
While you don’t need to dig into every detail, do be ready to tell the hiring manager why you can’t make it. Make sure you are honest as well, as the hiring manager may have connections that might sell you out if you aren’t truthful and someone else knows what you are actually up to instead.
Contact the Hiring Manager ASAP
As soon as you know that you can’t attend at the original time, you need to contact the hiring manager. The sooner you reach out, the greater the likelihood that they’ll be able to offer you another time, so get on the phone or send an email as quickly as possible.
If it is less than 24 hours until your interview, a phone call is usually the best approach. If you have longer, then an email may be sufficient. However, if you don’t get a response to your email within a day or two, following up with a phone call is generally a smart move.
Once you receive a response, make sure to thank the hiring manager. After all, they don’t have to accommodate your request, so showing your gratitude is a must if you want to make a positive impression.
Stay Calm
It’s important to remember that everyone has dealt with the unexpected at some point in their life. If you have a legitimate reason for having to reschedule, the hiring manager likely won’t hold it against you. They are human too, so they are probably going to be at least a bit understanding.
However, just make sure that you have a solid reason. Otherwise, they may think you are unreliable. Similarly, even if the hiring manager understands, you need to realize that they don’t have to reschedule your interview. If they can’t accommodate the change in their schedule, they may opt to remove you from contention, which is another reason why you should only reschedule if it genuinely a necessity.
