The Reason Tech Contractor Roles Aren’t Going Anywhere

Posted March 26th, 2019

Thanks to remote work technologies, companies are doing more than just allowing their permanent staff to telecommute; they are also outsourcing certain tasks to tech contractors. It is a mark of a larger trend supported by the growing gig economy as well as increased interest in flexible work options.

However, some wonder whether the trend is going to last. Based on the current climate, it appears that tech contractor roles will not disappear any time soon. Here’s why.

Covering Skill Gaps

At times, finding the right IT professional for a project is especially daunting. Skill gaps in some communities are hard to overcome, so hiring locally is not always a strong option.

Since setting tech pros up to work remotely is fairly easy today – partially due to the available technology and partially due to their technical prowess – hiring contractors from other areas of the country or world makes it easier to find critical skills to ensure a project’s success. If the skill set cannot be located near the company’s location, this approach gives them the option to look outside of the immediate area to secure hard-to-find or in-demand professionals with the right level of expertise.

Project-Oriented Needs

In some cases, businesses need to bring a tech professional onboard to handle specific tasks but do not require their skills long-term. In the old paradigm, they would still have to hire the person permanently and then, inevitably, lay them off when the project was over. Not only was this costly for the company but it could also be disheartening to the worker, particularly if they thought they had secured a long-term position.

As hiring tech contractors became increasingly common, there was a new paradigm that supported short-term arrangements based on current projects. Those who come on board for the role understand the nature of the position is temporary and based on a specific need that is only momentary.

It makes the relationship highly transaction-oriented, and both parties understand that from the beginning. The company gets what they need in the interim while the worker knows the nature and anticipated duration of the project, allowing them to plan accordingly.

Increased Interest

Younger generations are increasingly interested in crafting their careers based on their preferences. Since work-life balance is a focus and being engaged a priority, opting to work as a contractor in short-term roles gives them additional control.

For example, tech professionals can pick and choose their projects. This allows them to focus on the skills they enjoy using while avoiding tasks that do not interest them. Additionally, they can work as much or as little as they want, and may even be able to maintain flexible hours while working from home, something that many Millennials prefer.
