How Do You Dress for an IT Interview in Silicon Valley?
Posted January 15th, 2019
While most people have a general idea of how to dress for most interviews, when you are interviewing for an IT position in Silicon Valley, it can feel a bit tricky. After all, tech in the Bay area became known for its casual style, setting aside traditional business wardrobes for t-shirts and colorful tennis shoes.
Since mimicking the appearance of current employees can be a smart move, you may be a bit conflicted regarding how to proceed. However, you need to be careful when deciding how to dress for an IT interview in Silicon Valley, even if you know the environment is laid back.
If you aren’t sure what attire to select for your interview, here are some tips to help you decide.
Taking It Up a Notch Won’t Hurt You
Even if you understand that the workplace allows employees to wear jeans and t-shirts, that doesn’t mean the hiring manager will appreciate you dressing that way during an interview. During these meetings, your goal is to impress, and hiring managers often want to see the ideal version of what you have to offer. Since that is the case, dressing up a bit isn’t a bad idea.
When you choose your outfit, aim for smart casual or business casual. For example, a coordinated (but not matching) lightweight blazer and slacks can be a great option. Underneath the blazer, you can opt for a button-up shirt or possibly even a t-shirt, as long as it is in good repair and mimics typical attire in that office. Then, finish it off with a high-quality belt and a nice pair of loafers.
Interviewing is meant to be a bit of a formal process, so choosing a look similar to the one above can work, even if the office is usually casual. Plus, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed in nearly all occasions.
Don’t Forget Good Hygiene
The best outfit in the world won’t make up for dirty nails, greasy hair, or the smell of B.O. Before you head into an interview, you want to focus on good hygiene, as poor grooming isn’t going to help you land the job.
Take a moment the night before to trim and clean your nails. Make sure you allow for enough time in the morning to complete a full grooming routine, including showering, shaving, and styling.
As you get ready to head into your interview, consider taking a moment to brush your teeth. This ensures you don’t have any food particles stuck in spots that can be seen and that your breath is fresh. The easiest option is to purchase a pre-pasted disposable toothbrush. That way, when you’re done, you can just throw it all away.
