Should I Take This Job?

Finding a new job can feel like an arduous task. You may be unemployed and have only a limited amount of time to secure a new income, or you could be frustrated in your current role and seeking a speedy exit.
When a job offer comes along, it can be tempting to say yes immediately. But is that a smart move? If you are struggling to determine whether you should take “this job,” here are some questions to ask yourself before you accept.
Will It Help You Reach Your Goals?
First and foremost, you need to determine if the job has the ability to meet your goals. In some cases, if securing an income is a necessity, your only objective may be to get a paycheck, and that’s okay. When financial obligations are what is plaguing you, you may need to take the first thing that comes along to simply survive.
However, if there is anything else motivating you to seek out new opportunities, you need to decide if this particular job will help you get there. For example, does it create opportunities for advancement that will help you get to your dream job? Will you learn skills that will benefit you in the future?
Accepting a job offer that doesn’t help you reach your goals isn’t ideal, so make sure the opportunity aligns with what you are hoping to achieve.
Do You Have the Same Values?
Everyone holds certain values close to their heart, and every company typically reflects a specific set of values as well. When everyone’s values align, you’ll usually feel a sense of comfort in the job. But, when there’s a mismatch, there can be problems.
For instance, if you need a sense of autonomy on the job, a business that uses rigid principles to guide employees might not be ideal. If you are a service-oriented individual, a company that is solely focused on the bottom-line isn’t a great fit.
Before accepting a job, try to determine if your values and those exhibited by the potential employer mainly line up. If they don’t, then you might want to pass on the position.
What is Your Gut Saying?
When you’re presented with a job offer that looks good on paper, but something in your gut is telling you that saying yes isn’t a wise decision, then you need to figure out why. Your intuition may be hinting that something is wrong, even if you can’t initially determine why you feel that way.
Now, you don’t need to reject the offer immediately just because you are feeling hesitant. Instead, exploring that reaction and try and determine what precisely is bothering you. Usually, with a bit of soul-searching, you’ll be able to figure out what is holding you back. Then, you can analyze and research the point to see if it is general nerves about taking a new job or if there is actually a red flag hiding beneath the surface.
