How to Improve Your Time Management
Posted July 31st, 2017
In this day and age when people are deluged with work and doing more and more at the office, time management has become more than just a nice catchword. It has become absolutely essential. Everyone now needs to learn how to manage time effectively if they are going to perform well at their jobs.
The first thing to know about good time management is that it is not about how much you can do. It is more about doing the things that matter well. It is more about quality than quantity. You may be able to get through many of the things on your to-do list, but how many of those things are truly important? Good time management is about determining what is really important and tackling those things. Here are a few ways of doing that.
1. Establishing priorities
You need to decide what is most important and worth doing. One way of doing this is by breaking tasks down into one of four categories – things that are important and urgent, important but not urgent, not important but urgent, and not important and not urgent.
The highest priority should be given to tasks that are important and urgent. Next in line are the tasks that are important but not urgent. These are usually your personal goals, aims that you have set for self-improvement and advancement. After these, there are the tasks that are not important but urgent. These are usually things that someone else requires of you. And finally, there are the tasks that are not important and not urgent. Why bother doing these things at all? Cross them off your list.
2. Establish efficient workflow
Try to avoid repeating actions that you have already done. Group like tasks together. For example, if you are writing several articles, do the research for all three at once, then the writing for all of them together. This way, you don’t waste time having to go back again and researching after writing.
3. Work on a schedule
Set a time for when you will work on a particular task, and stick to a schedule. Work in timed increments and take regular breaks. For example, work for 30 minutes, then take a 5-10 minute break.
