How to Manage Different Personalities
Posted May 22nd, 2017
As a manager, you will have to deal with various kinds of personalities. The people you supervise will all be different, with their own styles and quirks. You should get to know the different personality types of your employees and adapt your communication style to the type of person you are dealing with.
Here is a short list of some of the more common types of dispositions.
1. Optimists
These are generally low-key types with a positive attitude toward their work. They may work a little more slowly, but they tend to be more conscientious. In dealing with these people, you can establish a rapport by talking to them about family and friends. They respond well to encouragement and praise. Their temperament is well suited to working on larger projects that require more planning and attention to detail.
2. Assertive
These are the take charge types. They like getting things done and making decisions. They are also good at what they do. When dealing with these people, you need to be direct and firm in your instructions. Sometimes you also need to remind them who the manager is. They also respond well to praise.
3. Investigator
They like to show their skill by finding things that are wrong. They have their own ideas on how to do things. They tend to procrastinate. If you have a project that requires a lot of digging and analysis, this might be the best person for the job. Generally, in dealing with this person, being direct and to the point is best.
4. Emotional
This type does not handle conflict well. They are alert to any slights or criticism. It is easy to hurt their feelings. When dealing with this person, you need to be empathetic and encouraging.
5. Socialite
These people are very talkative and interested in what is going on with everyone else. They are also not shy about expressing their emotion, both good and bad. In dealing with these people, you should take a more informal, upbeat approach.
6. Silent
This person doesn’t talk much. He or she is very introspective and not one to enter into conversations. But often it is worth the time to get to know the person and ask for his or her input because he may have some good ideas.
7. Antisocial
This is a person who likes to work alone. They are independent minded types who don’t see the importance of teamwork. As a manager, you need to address this issue and explain to this type of person the importance of teamwork and working together to get the job done.
You need to explain to them that they don’t have to be best buddies with everyone but they need to be reliable and supportive of the group.
8. Sourpuss
This is the type of person who believes that he or she alone knows how to do the job. They generally take a dim view of life and people. They complain often and usually come off as grumpy. When dealing with this person, you need to have a take charge attitude and spell out directly in a matter-of-fact way what needs to be done.
