Making Goals That are Achievable
Posted April 10th, 2017
Goals are obviously important. Psychologists say they motivate us and determine our actions. When we do not have goals, or our goals are not clearly expressed, we end up adrift or procrastinating.
So, here are a few tips to making goals that are clear and precise and achievable.
1. Make them specific and concrete
The more specific you make your goal, the more chance you have of accomplishing it. Abstract goals are not much use. For example, an abstract goal might be something like improving your health. But this doesn’t really give you a clear course of action. A better goal would be to walk 30 minutes a day.
2. Care for your goal
Don’t let anything interfere with it, even other goals. Remind yourself how important it is.
3. Make benchmark goals
If your goal is more of a long-term thing, such as writing a novel, for example, break it up into smaller more manageable goals that are easier to accomplish. In this case, it might be something like writing at least five pages every day.
4. Limit the number of goals
It is easier to maintain your energy and motivation if you do not scatter it among many different goals. If you have only one goal, it is easier to focus your efforts on that. If you have several goals, each demanding your attention, you may end up not knowing where to start and end up not doing anything.
5. Make adjustments
You may discover that you have been too ambitious in making your goal, that it is something demanding much more time and effort than you can possibly give to reach it. In that case, you may want to consider reworking your goal to something that is more within your reach.
6. What is your motivation?
How much do you want to achieve your goal? Do you have a tremendous desire to reach it or not? Goals that we create ourselves for our own improvement are ones that we usually have more motivation to achieve, rather than goals that are imposed on us by others.
