How People Stay Organized

Posted December 26th, 2016

Staying organized is a constant struggle for some. But it is definitely worth the effort. Those who are better organized have less stress, and they get more done. What do those who are well organized do to stay that way? Here are a few tips.

1. Don’t make it complicated
Keep your methods simple. Any schemes you devise to keep your materials organized should be basic and straightforward. The more complex your system, the harder and more onerous it becomes to maintain it.

So, avoid systems like color-coded folders, or anything with too many moving parts. Rather than making organizing easier, it makes it more difficult.

2. Have a routine
It’s easier to stay organized if you stick to a schedule. Develop a morning or evening routine for tasks that you need to take care of on a daily basis. For example, check your email and make your to-do list at the same time each day. The same goes for things like exercising and taking care of household chores.

3. Put things where they belong
You should have a place where everything goes, and you always need to put your things where they belong. This applies to items like keys and wallets, as well as papers. This way you will never have to wonder where you left your keys or cellphone.

4. Maintain a to-do list.
If you want to stay organized, this is a must. And make sure you keep it up to date. There is a lot of advice out there on the best way to set up to-do lists. You should find what works best for you. At a minimum, however, you should prioritize the tasks on your list so that you are doing the important stuff first.

Some counsel that you should keep your list short because you seldom get to the last items of a long list anyway.

5. Don’t be a perfectionist
People who are organized know how to prioritize and take short cuts to get things done. They don’t let themselves get bogged down.

6. Get rid of things you don’t use or don’t need.
This is something organized people do routinely. They do not wait for a certain day to do a housecleaning. For example, they take a few minutes every day to go through papers and get rid of what they don’t need. When they return from the grocery store, they take a little time to go through the refrigerator and toss items that are old.
