Advantages of Certificate Programs
Posted December 12th, 2016
To advance in your career, you have to keep learning, that is undisputed. But the kind of learning you get can vary depending on your particular profession and situation. One way to increase your knowledge is through a certificate program.
They are a good way to increase your knowledge, and they are much cheaper than an actual degree program. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider getting a credential.
1. Advance in your career.
Some certification programs, for example, help those who have a general knowledge in a certain area to specialize. These programs are designed for executives, managers and consultants. A certificate may enable you to get a promotion or expand into different areas at work.
2. Obtaining a needed a credential
Sometimes you need a credential – a few letters behind your name – to qualify for a new job or new responsibilities, and a certificate program can sometimes enable you to get that credential. For example, one institution offers a one-year graduate certificate in applied behavior analysis that enables people who already have master’s degrees to become board-certified analysts. These are people who work with autistic children to help them with their unconventional behavior, but there are many other applications as well.
Because this field is developing rapidly, offering this one-year credential enables the profession to meet the growing needs for these people.
3. Check out a different area than your own.
A certificate program enables you to explore a new area or specialty to determine if it is something you want to get involved in. This way, you don’t have to invest the time or money that would go along with getting an advanced degree. If you decide you like what you see, you can then go on to get an advanced degree. Since you may decide to pursue an advanced degree after obtaining a certificate, education officials advise that you make sure the credits you earn for your certificate can be applied toward your degree as well.
4. Devote time to something you enjoy.
A certificate program can allow you to pursue a topic or area of knowledge that interests you. It may not be something related to your career, but simply something you enjoy learning about.
