Improving the Body Can Improve the Mind

Posted November 7th, 2016

We tend to think about our minds and bodies as things that are generally separate. But, as the Greeks knew, the two are inextricably tied together and influence each other in many ways. There is a powerful connection between our physical health and our mental health. So, it should come as no surprise that there are ways to improve the function of our mind through our body, ways that can make a big difference in how we perform at work.

Here are some of those ways.

1. Walking can help with depression
Studies have shown that aerobic physical activity can have an effect on your brain. If you exercise consistently, you can actually produce new brain cells. Exercise also helps to improve your mood and can fight depression, almost as much as taking medication. About 30 minutes a day is all you need to do.

2. Smiling can help you feel better.
Believe it or not, smiling can affect how you feel. It can actually help to reduce pain. Conversely, frowning can actually make you feel the pain more. Smiling has also been shown to reduce your heart rate.

3. Deep breathing to help focus
Research has shown that taking a few deep breaths can improve your concentration. Moreover, counting the breaths can help as well if you like to multitask. People who do a lot of multitasking generally have trouble focusing. So, if you are a big multitasker at work, try some deep breathing to help you concentrate.

4. Yoga can reduce stress.
Research has shown that yoga actually increases the amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid in your brain. This substance is a neurotransmitter. And it may help to combat anxiety and other mental disorders in the brain.

Yoga has also been shown to help people who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. People with PTSD who did yoga showed a decrease in their symptoms.

5. Weightlifting can help with anxiety
About 15 percent of the people in the United States suffer from periods of anxiety. This anxiety can last anywhere from from 15 days a month to all of the time. This anxiety manifests itself as fear, apprehension, and worry. If nothing is done about this condition, it can lead to a number of health problems.

Research shows that weightlifting can help to lessen this anxiety. And you don’t need to do high intensity workouts with a lot of weight. Working with weights that are just moderately heavy actually helps the most with anxiety.
