Recruiting and Your Social Media Sites
Posted September 19th, 2016
Recruiters are turning to social media more than ever, especially now that the job market is tightening. So, whether you are actively looking for work or thinking about it, you need to be sure that your social media sites, like LinkedIn, are up to date and have the kind of information that will grab a recruiter’s attention.
Often, people treat their LinkedIn site like their resume – they update it only when they are a planning to search for a job. But that’s a mistake. You need to keep the information current to attract the interest of a recruiter. Here are some things you need to have in your profile.
1. An interesting headline.
This is the first thing a recruiter will see if he is doing a search, so you want to make sure it will grab his or her attention. In a few words, it should sum up what will follow in your profile. It should tell what you do in a nutshell.
You could just write your job title and industry, but that won’t do much to pique the recruiter’s interest. You need to be creative here.
2. A concise summary
Here you have about one to two paragraphs to expand on how you can add value to a company, to advertise your brand. But stick to the point – the summary should only deal with your professional accomplishments, nothing personal.
You may also want to include keywords in the summary that increase your chance of appearing in online searches. And keep it to no more than two paragraphs. A recruiter is unlikely to read more than that.
3. Precise job titles.
These are important not only to ensure recruiters will find you online, but that they will read through your entire profile. Your job title has to accurately state what you do, even though it may not match your actual job title.
The titles need to make it easy for the recruiter to get a handle on what your job is, something that is in general use within your industry, a standard name that is easily recognized.
4. Easily understood descriptions of your jobs
Many people simply do not bother to fill this section out, and as a result, a recruiter cannot see what they actually do. The description does not have to be anything detailed, just briefly outlining what the main duties of your jobs have been.
