How to Improve Onboarding

Posted August 8th, 2016

Companies generally realize the importance of onboarding. The purpose of onboarding is to get the employee off to a good start so that he or she will be as productive as possible and will enjoy his work experience.

But to really be effective, onboarding has to be looked at more as an ongoing process, rather than just a one-time thing. Continuing this process that begins with onboarding is a challenge that companies face. Because this process begins with onboarding, it is important that the orientation is done effectively.

1. Effective onboarding
A good onboarding process should accomplish several things. First, it should make the employee feel welcome. Another purpose of the orientation is to ensure that the employee has a clear understanding of his duties and responsibilities and how his performance will be measured. He should also have an understanding of how his job fits into the organization as a whole, and what the mission, goals and values of the organization are. Also, the orientation should give the employee information about the resources available to help him do his job effectively. Onboarding should help to acquaint him with the company culture as well, and establish the lines of communication.

2. Continuing the process
To continue this process, the company needs to implement strategies for retention and support for the new person. It should begin with a meeting between the supervisor and new person shortly after onboarding has been completed to sound out the person about the onboarding experience.

They should talk about what was most helpful to the employee about the onboarding, what was not clear or where more information was needed, what could be done to improve it, and what obstacles the employee faces. They should also talk about how the employee will put what he has learned to use and what the manager can do to support the employee. They should also talk about how the person’s progress will be followed and measured.

To follow up with the onboarding, the supervisor can also send out periodic emails addressing issues that have come up or addressing questions and concerns raised by the new person and other employees.
