How to Improve the Hiring Process

Posted August 1st, 2016

Is it taking a long time for you to fill your open positions? Are you unhappy with the resumes that you do receive? If so, it sounds like your recruiting process needs an overhaul. Here are a few ideas.

1. Maintain a pool of possible candidates.
Usually, a company does not start looking for people until there is an opening. Companies need to be more proactive, and maintain contact with possible candidates even when there is no opening. You need to maintain contact and build relationships with people so that you don’t have to start from square one when an opening does arise.

2. Decide which job to fill first
Often, there are several openings at once. Companies then try to fill them all at the same time. But in doing this, the firms are spreading their resources too thin, and it usually takes even longer to fill the jobs.

If your company has more than one opening at the same time, you need to fill one at a time. Determine which you need to fill first, and work on that alone. Most jobs are vacant for about a month. Trying to fill jobs simultaneously may take even longer, and that will result in lost productivity.

3. Set airtight deadlines.
Too often, employers allow employee searches to drag on in a futile attempt to find the perfect candidate. Just as with any other important project, you need to set deadlines and stick to them. Plan out how long you want to take on each part of the hiring process – reviewing resumes, interviewing – and then put a deadline on making an offer.

4. Cut back on the number of interviews
The time it takes to interview job candidates is constantly increasing. A recent survey put the average time at about three weeks.

If you cut back on the number of candidates that you interview, you will save a lot of time. In order to do this, you need to first be clear about exactly what you are looking for, what skills and background.

You should make an outline of the absolute minimum requirements that are needed for the job, and then automatically eliminate anyone who does not meet those requirements. Make sure everyone involved in the hiring process is on the same page when it comes to requirements, so you don’t waste time.
