Qualities That Set Good IT Managers Apart
Posted January 25th, 2016
Having good IT managers has become essential for just about all businesses. Naturally, when hiring someone for the position, you want the person to be proficient in the tech part of the job. But being a good IT manager is about more than just the technology. There are other things you need to be looking for as well.
1. Good communication skills
An IT manager has to deal routinely with people who are having tech problems, and who may not be in the best mood. The manager needs to know how to work with people to help them through their issues. The manager needs to know how to explain complex processes in terms that a lay person can understand.
Good communication involves listening and learning as much as it does talking.
2. Being able to resolve conflict
Again, when people are having problems with their computer technology, they are apt to be combative, to complain, to look for someone or something to blame. When the manager steps into this situation, he or she must know how to deal with it tactfully, to defuse the rancor. It involves knowing how to handle people as much as machines.
3. Good organizational skills
A good IT manager knows how to prioritize his or her time to handle the more important tasks first. The manager must be able to see how everything fits together in the overall functioning of the IT system. He must be nimble, able to adapt to change and to change course when the situation demands it.
4. Good leadership skills
If the ITmanager is leading a team of specialists, he has to have the leadership skills to be effective. He or she must know how to ensure team members are getting what they need, that they are performing up to standards, that they are reaching their goals.
Leading itself involves good communication, being available to listen to team members problems and concerns. It also involves making team members accountable for their performance.
5. Good presentation skills
IT is now more integrated with the entire company than ever before. It has become an essential business function. As a result, the IT manager needs to be able to effectively make presentations on tech problems, challenges and changes to other departments and company leadership. He will need to give presentations on subjects like budgets, performance reviews, infrastructure updates and cybersecurity.
