The Best Predictor of Job Success

Posted December 21st, 2015

All businesses are looking for people who will be successful in their jobs, people who will be outstanding performers and add significant value to the company. Companies use various indicators as predictors of success. Some of these predictors are how well the person has performed in the past, the kind and level of skills the person has, and how the person performs on various tests.

But some companies are finding another indicator that has a very strong correlation with how successful a person is on the job, and that is how well the person learns. In fact, the head of human resources at Google has said that, for his company, learning ability is the leading predictor of a person’s success. Why is that? Here are a few reasons.

1. The pace of change.
Everyone knows that change is occurring more rapidly than ever before, driven by new technology and new research. So if a company expects to keep up with its competition, people in that company must constantly stay up to date in what is happening in their field.

Because of this, it is no longer feasible to simply expect company leadership to bring new ideas on board and then disseminate them to the workforce. People at every level need to be constantly learning. People who are always learning do so because they know their knowledge will soon become outdated.

2. There is no innovation and creativity without knowledge acquired by learning.
To stay on the leading edge, companies need to be innovative. In order to do this, they need to have workers who collaborate, who share ideas. But collaboration is of no use if people have no new ideas to share, hence the importance of learning. Also, learning is necessary because teams need to adapt quickly. They cannot afford the time and expense of bringing someone up to speed on something if the person has not already learned about it.

3. Learning is needed to keep performance levels high.
Jobs morph quickly these days. So, in order just to keep performing well in the job, people need to keep up with the changes, and that requires constant learning.

4. Globalization
Because many companies are now international in scope, they cover different geographical and cultural landscapes, which require more learning from employees to navigate the differences in business terrain.
